These answers are written for users who need clarity quickly: what the warning means, what to do first and when to stop trusting the drive.
What does the health percentage mean?
It is a simplified risk signal based on detected problems and device telemetry. A high score is reassuring, but the explanation text matters because it tells you what is affecting the score. If the score drops, compare it with SMART changes and recent symptoms.
Is a green Windows status enough?
Not always. Windows can report a basic pass while deeper attributes show weak sectors, heat, wear or communication errors. Use the basic status as a quick signal, not as a full diagnosis.
What should I do when bad sectors appear?
Back up important data first. Bad sectors mean the drive has already found areas it could not reliably use. After the backup, run non-destructive tests and watch whether the count increases.
Which temperature is too high?
There is no single perfect number for every drive, but sustained high temperature shortens margins and often points to airflow or enclosure problems. Look at current, average and maximum history instead of one reading alone.
Do SSDs fail differently than hard drives?
Yes. SSDs do not have spinning platters, but they still wear, overheat, suffer controller errors and can fail suddenly. Watch wear indicators, spare blocks, media errors, unsafe shutdowns and temperature.
Can Hard Disk Sentinel monitor external drives?
Often yes, but the USB bridge or enclosure must expose the right information. If a device shows limited details, test with another enclosure or direct connection before assuming the drive is healthy.
Should I run tests before backing up?
If the warning suggests active media problems, back up first. Intensive tests can stress a weak drive. After important data is safe, testing becomes useful and much less risky.
When should I replace a drive?
Replace it when errors are increasing, health keeps dropping, the drive becomes unreliable, or the data is too important for uncertainty. Drives are cheaper than recovery and downtime.
